"Checkmate" - Pen, Watercolor

"Oh my, he's got a spatula!" was the statement that weaseled it's way into my head as I was plotting out the composition. Originally, he was just going to be clutching a dagger, pathetic in itself against his group of pursuers, but the cooking utensil had a nice ring to it (which might literally ring if it was a metal spatula).

I worked up the rough in February or March, but then had to shelve it when other things came down the pipeline. It feels good to have it finished, even if it took 6 months to do so.

Anyway, it's loosely inspired by the old Interplay game "Battle Chess" that I played as a kid, 19-20 years ago. I have been wanting to do a chess based illustration, and when it came down to how I was going to portray the Rook, I decided it'd be cool to pay homage to that game by making it a giant stone Golem.

Six String Wizard

Six String Wizard (pen, watercolor)

Fast Food Goddess (colored pencils, pen)

The Leaning Tower (ballpoint in pocketbook)

A trio of things this time around: a commission, and two doodle book pages. The Wizard is for my aunt, The Fast Food Goddess is from March of 2011, and the Leaning Tower is from February of this year.

I'm not entirely sure why I didn't finish coloring the Goddess' hamburger noggin'. That, at the least, would have been nice. Oh, well.

More silliness from my pocket doodle book.
